How we operate:

When we accept an order and deposit for your upgrade, we place an order for an engine to be built at PennYanAero. Currently 4-5 months is the lead time for an engine build, so plan ahead if you are contemplating the upgrade. Once we have the overhauled engine and propeller in house, we are ready to perform your upgrade. We remove your engine and propeller and install the new 180 hp engine, perform an operation check and test flight and are ready for you to fly home. Then your removed engine is sent to PennYanAero as a core for a future build.

In order to simplify the process, we order all of our engines to the same specifications. Overhauled Nickel cylinders are the standard. They offer the best corrosion protection and ease of break in.

We are happy to price other engine options such as new cylinders or roller rockers, currently there are availability issues with most of these options.

We are also happy to offer any of the components and STC paperwork for you or your shop to install.

We do not install customer supplied engines. It’s probably a great engine but the engines we receive are configured to simplify our installation and the support we receive from PennYanAero is top notch.

Pricing:

Current pricing is $49,850 for an installed engine and new propeller at our shop. This pricing assumes that your removed engine will be a repairable core. The case and crankshaft are required to be repairable to overhauled condition. There are several flaws that can cause parts to be unrepairable, even though they may still be flying and signed off as airworthy at an annual inspection. The annual inspection does not include an internal inspection of the case and crank like an engine overhaul will.

If your existing engine case or crank are deemed unrepairable, then additional core charges apply. Nobody likes these charges, least of which us because we have to give you bad news. Being human we don’t like giving bad news or receiving it, but remember, had you sent your existing engine off for overhaul, these parts would have been “Red Tagged” as well. So your overhaul cost would have gone up as well (and you would have no more power.)

The current core charge is $9000 ea for an unrepairable case or crank. Yes, this seems high but the current market has very little inventory available and this represents the current cost to replace those items.

Options

During installation we are happy to install any of our upgraded items like new baffling or teflon hoses. We offer these items to improve the service life of your engine installation and reduce maintenance cost going forward.

And can you do this too?

Our maintenance facility is capable of repairs, annuals and upgrades, however please communicate the full extent of the scope of work you wish before arriving for your upgrade. We schedule 2 days of shoptime for the upgrade, Repairs, changes or upgrades will require more time and we need to be considerate of the timeline of work being performed on other customers aircraft as well.
